We drove two hours to Hurricane Ridge section of Olympic National Park.   After gaining 5200 feet of elevation over 17 miles, we were disappointed to find out that there was over 8 feet of snow at the parking lot. Most of the trails were closed, but the view from the parking lot was stunning… A long range of snow capped mountains in a panorama.  We were able to Walk Rd., Cave Road which was closed to traffic. We saw the Juan de Fuca Strait and Vancouver Island from the viewpoints.

We walked a portion of the Dungeness spit. This spit goes 5 miles out into the ocean and it’s good shelter for wildlife. We saw cormorants, gulls, and loons. The “you may see” whales, orcas and seals were nowhere to be found so we decided to head back. The thrill of seeing a snowy owl 5 feet in front of me was amazing. He looked at me and I looked at him and then he flew 15 feet further into the trees. We watched him for a while as he was watching for small prey.
